Nutrition & Weight Loss Counseling
It is common for most dogs and cats to be carrying a few too many pounds. It is estimated that 17 million dogs and cats in the United States are overweight or obese and those numbers are rapidly increasing. Obesity is more than an appearance problem; Obesity is a medical condition that can have severe consequences on your pet's health. Did you know that for a medium breed dog, 6 pounds overweight is equivalent to 25 pounds overweight for a human or that a domestic shorthair feline being 6 pounds overweight is equivalent to 54 pounds overweight for a human?
The good news for you and your pet is with a lot of planning and hard work, Northern Animal Clinic has created a Weight Loss Challenge Program. NAC's goal is to help our patients become healthier and have a better, more enjoyable quality of life. The benefit to you is that your pet will live a longer, healthier life. Joining the NAC Weight Loss Challenge will help your pet avoid medical conditions like arthritis, respiratory and breathing problems, heart disease, and diabetes, increased risks of surgery, and decreased activity or loss of mobility due to pain.

TRUE STORY
Hello, my name is Misty and I am a 4 year old chocolate lab; and this is my success story!

But in the last year I had noticed it was harder to chase those darn squirrels, it was harder to catch my breath, my back legs felt sore and stiff, and I just couldn’t run to my fullest potential. So instead of doing one of my most favorite things, I laid on the grass outside and dreamt of chasing squirrels because I didn’t like the way I felt afterwards.
My mom decided to take me to the vet because she noticed decrease in my activity and my hard time breathing. The very nice veterinarian told me I was OBESE! (How rude!!) She explained to me and my mother that I am only 3 years old, I should not be lying on the grass dreaming, I should be out there catching those squirrels. She explained to us that obesity can decrease my life span and cause major health risks to me. She also explained this was why I wasn’t the way I was a year ago at 85 pounds, because now I was 100 pounds.
We all decided together that I needed to lose weight or it was just going to continue to slow me down. We switched my food, I started exercising more, and my mom rewards me with carrots and affection instead of those high-in-fat milk bones.
I have lost 15 pounds in six months; the best part is that I feel like a pup again, they were easy changes that I don’t even think about! I can run through my yard and not feel stiff and sore, I’m not out of breath as quickly, and I will continue to live a HEALTHY and fun life now that I have met my goal.
